How to improve your on-site SEO in 7 super easy steps

Introduction

When some businesses implement SEO themselves, it can sometimes feel as though there’s mountains of work that need to be completed.

And sometimes this can be true, especially if the website is brand new. Yet, having said that we find breaking the tasks down into three categories often helps. Those categories are on-site seo, off-site seo and social media.

Within this article we are going to explain seven ways that you can improve your businesses on-site SEO.

Now of course there’s plenty of more ways you can improve your businesses onsite that just these seven methods. Yet, the seven areas we have mentioned, these are very easy to do, so we think there a good place to start.

#1 Think about whether each service or product should have its own page?

Let’s say you run a plumbing business, and you’ve opted for a really basic website, let’s say it consists of just a homepage, an about us page and also a contact us page.

Now, on the about us page you may state that you offer boiler repair, emergency call outs and also bathroom installations, so that be enough detail, right?

Well, if you want to optimise each separate service that your business offers, its going to be a lot harder if they are all grouped together on just one page.

That’s to say you should think about whether each service should have its own page, that way each page should have its own:

·        Meta title and meta description

·        Alt tag

·        Product or service description

·        URL extension

·        H1 to H6 tags

·        Calls to action

·        Schema mark-up

·        FAQ

So, as you can see, sometimes its better for a business to separate its services or products onto a distinctly different page.

#2 Internal backlinks

Now, we all know that backlinks are important to SEO, right? Well, that’s kind of like a no-brainer of a question, yet what doesn’t get talked about all too often is the use of internal links on a website.

So, for example, say you’re on an SEO companies website, like ours, and you read a term that you’re not too familiar with, let’s say its Schema mark-up, well the agency may use an internal link on the term “Schema mark-up” to take you a page dedicated to explaining what Schema means.

This is super useful to anyone which is reading the blog post, because you guessed it, they can simply click the link and find out what that word means. This means its good for the reader, but if implemented in a white hat way, well, it can also help your businesses SEO as well, so kind of a win-win!

#3 Page speed

Let’s face it, most of us have hectic lifestyles these days. That’s to say people just haven’t got the time to wait around anymore!

So, if your company website takes an eternity to load, well its not going to do your business SEO any good.

In a world with Google’s AMP and the need for company websites to load quickly, your business really has to think of ways to get the company website loading much faster.

#4 Calls to action

Whether your looking for a divorce solicitor, or a dentist to help make your teeth whiter, it’s fair to say that most websites offer a lot of information.

Some websites may well be more to the point than others, yet some may just waffle on and on.

So, what can happen is that some readers may just get absorbed by all that information, and what is really needed is a sort of prompt, encouraging that person to buy something or say sign-up to a company newsletter.

This means a call to action button may well be useful, a call to action button is simply a prompt, that can be a really effective marketing tool.

#5 Don’t forget the finishing touches

Meta titles, meta descriptions and alt tags take mere seconds to implement, so make sure your website has them.

The meta title and meta description are simply the snippet of text that you see in the SERP’s when your looking for a website. So, you need to come up with something snappy, something that will encourage a person to click the add, and visit your website.

Then alt tags are really important as well, for example you may retail dog collars, now you could just label each picture of the dog collars 1, 2 and 3. Yet, if you done this, we think you would be missing a trick.

That’s because someone may well be searching for a red dog collar, with diamonds for example. So, if you assign an accurate description to the alt tag, well you guessed it your improving your websites seo.

#6 Update your website

It’s important to update your website, that’s to say add a new blog post every now and then.

Here’s our golden rules when adding blog posts to your website:

·        Quality must come first, so spend a great deal of time writing a really interesting blog post

·        Make sure its relevant to your business, or your business sector

·        Do not copy the content from another website

·        Try and answer questions that your customers commonly ask

·        Make sure that all work is white hat

·        If in doubt do consult a white hat agency

#7 Make sure the websites NAP details are visible

This is a really important one, especially if your implementing local SEO, that’s to have the businesses NAP details on the website.

NAP stands for name of the business, its address and phone number.
